He must be guilty. Jail the creep. That won't happen, trust me. Nor should it. The Wojcio trial, which has so far included some pre-trial motions and jury selection, is sure to provide a fascinating insight into the unseemly side of a game that deserves its bad reputation. It will not, however, paint the picture of a cheat or a crook or anyone that any reasonable person could convict.

Unless the state's lawyers have a mound of credible evidence that they have yet to produce, and it doesn't appear that they do, this is a terrible waste of the taxpayers' money. Wojcio, 37 and one of New Jersey's best drivers before being grounded by the charges, was caught and put on trial by people who obviously have no knowledge of racing, betting or the wheres and whys of fixing a race. Put 12 horseplayers on the jury and this guy walks out of the Monmouth County Courthouse a free man. This is how bad it is: The evidence includes a race in which it is alleged Wojcio stiffed an 84-1 shot, which helped him and his partners in crime cash a $16.
