Look at the sides of the guitar. If you see one very faint line in the side of the guitar, then this is a mid-late 70's MIJ guitar (with a mahogany pancake construction - a very nice guitar.) BUT, if you see several lines, then it is a plywood body and not worth your time. The headstocks look similar, but the plywood guitar will have a slightly longer headstock and the Hohner script will be a gold decal. The mahogany bodied guitar will have a MOP inlayed Hohner script.
Please post pics if you end up with the guitar! I went to take a look at it and it seems to be one of the HG-430LP-S. It had the MOP Inlays and the very subtle line on the side like you indicated CN.
The tuning peg for the G string was completely different from the other ones. It didn't have the gold pickups nor a gold bridge like the HG-430LP-S within the image above. The volume control knobs were completely different. The selector switch was a bit crooked too.
50 Greats For The Piano Yamaha Pdf here. They let me play the guitar this time and the neck pickup sounded fantastic. Only thing I come to realize is that the bridge pickup didn't work and the upper backplate on the back was gone. That and the bridge pickup seemed to be a brand new one (probably stock that the old owner just put in there before pawning it). The old owner didn't hook it up. Nor did he even anchor it in. The pickup literally just sat in there, and if i were to flip over the guitar the only thing holding it in was the strings.
Driver Placa De Retea Windows Xp Sp2 Universal. I wasn't able to pull the pickup out to see if there was anything wrong under the bridge pickup inside, but I went ahead and waited on getting the guitar to see your guys' opinions on the bridge pickup. I don't know why the previous owner wouldn't take the time to even properly install the bridge pick-up unless something didnt work right.
So just to be cautious I just wanted to see what you guys thought, if there could be anything wrong under it or what not. The price was $220, but the guy there noticed the problem with the bridge and no backplate so he brought it down to $165. I almost bought it then and there, but again just wanted to see if there was anything irreparable about it.
Edit: BTW its a subtle looking cherry sunburst. I thought it was a tobacco sunburst but I got it mixed up with one of their Mann LP copies they had there.
For $165 I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. You can wire up the neck p/up yourself or have a shop do it. The bridge & tailpiece may be original, the gold plating usually has come off these guitars if they were given any playing time.
I think, even in this shape, the guitar is a great deal. If you put a little effort into fixing it up, you'll have an awesome player.
However, if the one unoriginal tuner bothers you, I cant account for that. You could have a set of Grovers installed for not too much $. Oh, and the reason the previous owner probably didn't harness the bridge p/up is because the original holes are slightly different from Gibson (American) sizes, so replacement parts (p/up surrounds) are not an exact fit. And the original surrounds are VERY prone to breakage. Click to expand.Just bought it on the 8th and the texture of the sound is so rich. Very subtle looking finish. Quite a few paint chips and dings found a good quarter or half inch crack on the underside.
No pick guard and I just realized the surround on the bridge is different from the one on the neck. You pretty much nailed in on the board CN about the gold paint. A closer look shows the paint chipped and the bridge pretty rugged same with the neck p/up.
